“The business really don’t know what they want (from IT)! They ask us to create an app – and then they don’t know what it should do!” – A sentence heard in IT organizations everywhere (likely also in your company).
Yes, it can be frustrating. But what can be done about it?
A tip from Quentin Tarantino:
“You are going to work with a lot of people who (…) don’t quite get it. It’s your job to make them – in the nicest and most loving way possible – get it.” (from Tarantino’s keynote speech at UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television)
Tarantino is not talking to IT professionals in this speech. That’s not bug, but a feature. It only underscores that no matter where you work – you must work with people who don’t really understand what you do. Even if they need something from you.
If they don’t get it – it’s your job to make them – you know how – get it.
